Introduction to the Mayan Calendar

by Carol McCloud

We are now moving through to the end of what the Maya call the "Great Cycle". These next years until December 21, 2012, are the last years of the 12th Baktun of this Great Mayan Cycle.

The Great Cycle is a total of 13 Baktuns 1,872 million days or approximately 5125 years. Below are the long count dates counting down, like a car odometer, only with several different calculations. The first number of the Great cycle in the long count is the Baktun (144,000 days or 394.5 years), second is the Katun (7200 days or 19.7 years), next the Tun (360 days or 1 Mayan year), the Uinal (20 days or 1 Mayan month) and the last number is the kin (day) related to the number of the day-sign within the 20 day cycle.

Dec 21 2008-12 Cauac -12.19.15.16.19 (Dec.22-13 Ahau) Dec 21 2009 -13 Kan 12.19.16.17.4 (Dec.22-1 Chicchan) Dec 21 2010- 1 Muluc-12.19.17.17.9 (Dec.22-2 Oc) Dec 21 2011- 2 Ix -12.19.18.17.14 (Dec.22-3 Men) Dec 21 2012- 4 Ahau- 13.0.0.0.0 (Dec.22- 5 Imix - Beginning of New Cycle)

The idea of the end of a Great Cycle on Dec 21, 2012 as posed by the Maya has certainly sparked the attention of the spiritual world in the last 20 years. It is important to remember that this is merely the culmination of the old cycle and the beginning of another cycle. This is a chance for new way of being with a new sense of time. Ahau is the last day in the cycle of 20, a day-sign meaning solar lord, enlightenment and ascension. Ahau is always followed by the first day-sign of the series, Imix, which is the archetypal primordial feminine deity that emerges from a cosmic soup to begin again the new dream and new evolutionary cycle.

In a purely archetypal sense this last date of the Mayan Long Count calendar - 13.0.0.0.0 (4 Ahau) is telling us that on December 21, 2012 we will be pressing a sort of cosmic reset button, a "reset button" that also happens in the micro cycle of 20 and 13. As we move through this 20 day evolutionary cycle from Imix to Ahau and follow the twenty cycles of 13 days, working the above and below, micro to macro we are being given an opportunity to re-create our reality and press that reset button any time we choose.

Each of these Mayan time cycles or pulses of the year allows us an opportunity to tune into the energies of a natural creative process. With the count of 13 we can use the first day as a point for deep meditation, focus and intention. On the first day we should be asking ourselves what we want to manifest as it relates to the meaning of each particular time pulse and as it relates to the sign of the moon and other planetary transits. It is important to note that the first day of the 13 day pulse and each succeeding day will relate to a particular energy and vibration that can be felt collectively and also individually depending on the day you were born.

The Mayan calendar can teach us how to make these changes with every breath and with every intention as the cycles within cycles spiral us into new generations of thought. When we use the calendar cycles along with Astrological transits, important information can be anchored and assimilated into reality and form. As time continues to speed up and we come to the completion of this last great cycle we may not have to be reborn to enter our own future generation. We are laying the foundation for that future now.
